Popular tradition tells that the master builder, struggling to complete the work due to the continuous floods of the Serchio River, asked the Devil for help. The Devil promised to finish the bridge in a single night in exchange for the soul of the first living being to cross it. To trick him, once the work was finished, a dog was sent across the bridge first. Discovering the trick, the Devil threw himself furiously into the waters of the Serchio. A legend passed down through time that has helped make this monument one of the best-known symbols of the territory.
